Elizabeth Bennet
Elizabeth is the protagonist of the novel. The second of five Bennet sisters, Elizabeth is the most intelligent and sensible of them all. She is well read, but her talk is too sharp for her own good at times. She struggles with keeping up with the turmoil in her family. Her mother is ridiculous and her father is distant. She is quick to judge, especially Mr. Darcy, and her judgement's distance her from the world that surrounds her. Despite the social and internal aspects she has to overcome to achieve her dream of a true romance, Elizabeth comes to understand her shortcomings, accepting Mr. Darcy's affections, which allows her to experience a happy romance.

Fitzwilliam DarcyDarcy is a wealthy member of the landed gentry. He resides in Pemberly. He is the male counterpart to Elizabeth. His sense of superiority in mind and wealth desserts him from others, while also giving him an aura of spectacular mystery. Just like Lizzie, he has a tendency to prematurely judge the people he meets. Unlike Lizzie he comes from wealth and his consciousness of his position in society makes him appear snobbish and stuck up to other, less wealthy members of the gentry. Despite his self-centered appearance, he does everything he can to be with Elizabeth once he realizes he wants to be with her, going as far as paying off Wickham to save the Bennet family from disgrace, disobeying Lady Catherine.
